An interview with Interior Design Team, Smoke and Mirrors

We have been keeping our eye on Interior Design team, Smoke and Mirrors for a while now and we have been so inspired by their fabulous work in the industry.

For the past 25 years mother and daughter team, Marina and Verity have worked on some amazing projects from a renovating a French chateau, fully refurbishing a former Surrey Hills hotel and building a new England style home in West Sussex and all different properties in between.

Having been asked on many occasions to design and stage other people’s properties, the talented team of two have come together in collaboration to start Smoke and Mirrors.

What inspired you to start Smoke and Mirrors?

Over many years we have been approached to design and style other people's properties, so we decided to create a business doing just that!. Because of our love of design, and desire to enhance properties it seemed like the perfect fit for us!

How would you describe your signature style?

Modern country is our signature style. It is timeless, with a neutral palette and antique pieces to add depth and interest. Attention to detail is so important!

Which upcoming interior trends will you be keeping your eyes on this season?

The colour blue is due to be a big trend this year, along with incorporating different textures to a scheme. Mixed patterns are also going to be a key feature in 2017.

What are your 3 favourite items from the La Residence Interiors collection?

We really love the Sylvine coffee & side tables, they go well with any scheme. Also the Osbourne ottoman which is a fantastic shape, and unique to La Residence Interiors. And also the Burford dining chairs, they make any dining room look stunning.

What projects have you got coming up in the next 6 months, which you can tell us about?

We are currently working on a beautiful New England style property in The Witterings. It is a wonderfully light and spacious property right near the beach.

How many projects have you worked on as a team over the years?

Individually we have developed, styled and built many properties, both in the UK and Europe, but together the property in The Witterings will be our third.

We want to share with you our passion for our business and how it all began and so here in our 'About us' video you can hear us talking about how it began all those years ago.

As we pride ourselves on the excellent quality of our furniture we thought it would be really effective to show our products on film as well as detailed photographs, which are all shot in luxury lifestyle settings in order to give you inspiration when you are creating your dream interiors.

Here I am talking about my favourite products in the collection, and why we designed them .Here you get to see close up images of the items before making the all time important decision.

Our Wolsey table is one of our orignal pieces and also in my own home so I could talk all day about this stunning centrepiece.

Our Edit - All the latest in fashion, interiors, travel and living that have been tried and loved.

We recently had the absolute pleasure of meeting Morag Turner, who has collaborated with her sister, Rowan Evans to bring us the new online magazine, Our Edit.

Girls after our own heart we immediately hit it off and found we had all sorts in common to include a love of fashion, interiors and all the stylish things in life.

Our Edit brings you the latest in fashion, interiors, travel and living that have been tried and loved. If it’s not in their homes, their wardrobes or contacts book you won’t read about it in Our Edit.

We caught up with them to find out more.

Tell us a bit about your new online magazine, Our Edit?

Our Edit is an online lifestyle magazine covering everything from fashion and wellness to interiors and travel, which I co-edit with my sister Rowan Evans. We have always shared a love of all things stylish and with our backgrounds in magazines and digital publishing, producing our own magazine covering the topics we love seemed like the natural next step.

Our Edit is a curated selection of the latest fashion, interiors, travel and wellness that we have tried and love. If it’s not in our homes, our wardrobes or our contacts book, you won’t read about it in Our Edit.

What are your plans for the magazine for 2017?

2017 will be a big year for us as we grow our readership. We want to expand the magazine further, covering more areas, including more authored editorial from inspirational women, ensuring we give our readers a rounded picture of what it means to live a stylish life.

What do you get up too when you're not working on the magazine?

I am a real project person so I always have something on the go. I’ve just finished a big renovation of my house, which has been a labour of love as interior design is a real passion of mine. Living in a building site for six months was not fun but I now have my perfect home so it was worth it. In the Spring I’ll move on to redesigning the garden.

We have three little boys, 8, 6 and 2, so they keep me mega busy. On a Saturday morning you’ll find me by a football or rugby pitch, in my wellies, with my thermos cup. By evening I’ll swap that for a nice restaurant, a LBD and glass of fizz. I love eating out with my husband and our friends and trying new places. My recent favourites are Restaurant Ours in Chelsea and Frenchie in Covent Garden – well worth a visit.

What are your best tips on balancing work life with family life?

Unless there is a specific reason not to, I only work when the boys are a school and nursery. As soon as they are home at 4pm I focus on them. This means cramming a lot into my days to get through all my work and meetings, but the whole point of working for myself was to make sure I had that flexibility.

For years I worked full time on newspapers and glossy magazines and I loved it, but now I need to structure my work around my children and my home life.

I am also the Queen of the spreadsheet! With three children, work and a packed social life, I need to keep track of who is doing what and when.

What / Who is your biggest inspiration?

My sister and my friends. I am surrounded by the most amazing women who are all achieving such wonderful things in their working and personal lives. We encourage and inspire each other as we balance motherhood, careers and everything else we have to fit in.

What useful advice would you give to other women looking to start a business?

Planning is key. Rowan and I spent three months carefully deciding on exactly what we wanted Our Edit to be before we launched. Preparation like that really pays off and it will in any business. It allows you to know how your time is best spent so you can work most efficiently and turn your business from being just an idea to a reality.

I’d also say that there really are no short cuts. If you want to be successful you have to work hard and dedicate yourself to what you are doing. A combination of planning and effort will pay off.

You can subscribe to the Our Edit mailing list for a weekly round up direct to your inbox or you can visit the magazine daily for a quick update.

Our new Furniture pieces have arrived.

For those of you who follow us on our social media channels you will be well aware that we have just launched some amazing new pieces onto our online store.

‘After many months of planning and preparation, we are over the moon with our new designs we know that the timeless style of these pieces will complement your interiors creating the most exquisite of homes. So here is a peek at our some of our new pieces as well as our ideas behind the interior styling.

The Westcott Ottoman

The exquisite Westcott Ottoman features a classic buttoned top and makes for a perfect footstool, or extra seating.  Styled here alongside our popular Heavenly sofa, which is upholstered in our beautiful belgian linen and also available on our website.

We love the Sophie Villepigue vase featued as an elegant focal point on the ottoman.

The Osborne Ottoman

Inspired by our popular Petit Royale ottoman this ottoman also features a sturdy solid weathered oak frame and brass studded detail around the edge this piece is also completed with a sumptuous deep buttoned top.

The new Andrew Martin Interior Design Review 20th Edition features in this shot. We highly recommend this book for all you interior enthusiasts out there.

Our favourite tipple, Silent Pool Gin is displayed on an antique silver tray in order to add a splash of colour.

The Grosvenor Footstool

The fabulous Grosvenor Footstool is a beautifully handcrafted piece of furniture. Made with meticulous care this exceptionally stunning footstool looks perfect as a pair in a sitting room, or also used in a bedroom at the end of bed as a feature.

Brompton Side Table

The Brompton side table is a great alternative to the classic rectangle side table and its hand turned solid tiered base will be sure to add refined elegance to any room.

In this shot we wanted to keep the styling really simple and minimal so as to show off the detail on the table and the stud detail on the sofa, so used are our new Tree Print cushions and our signature candles alongside a huge display of cream roses and eucalyptus.

The Surrey Digital Awards 2016

We were over the moon to have been recently nominated as a finalist for two awards for the Surrey Digital Awards 2016. Now in its second year these awards reward innovation and progressive thinking by businesses, individuals, events, charities or educational establishments.

We were finalists for two awards covering two  categories, which were Website: Lifestyle and Culture and Website: Small Business. This is the first award we had been nominated for, for our business and we weren’t sure what to expect, but the anticipation of winning a possible award caused great excitement for us. Therefore we were very happy when the day finally arrived.

The evening commenced with a champagne reception, which was full of lots of other excited business owners chatting and networking amongst each other. We were then ushered to the main event room where the awards ceremony was to take place.

The evening continued with live music from an acoustic trio, while dinner was served and we chatted to fellow nominees about our businesses and experiences. The evening’s entertainment was rounded up by a presentation by Mclaren’s Head of Digital and Social Media, which was very interesting. The awards ceremony soon followed and there were 16 awards to be presented to the businesses which had reached the finals.

Early into the evening the first category which we’d been nominated for was announced and to our absolute shock and surprise we were the winners of the Gold Award for Website: Lifestyle and Culture. We were quickly ushered onto the stage to receive our award and then interviewed in the winner’s enclosure. This was a great start to the evening. It was so fantastic to see so many businesses large and small being recognised for all their hard work and achievements. We met some lovely fellow business owners and it was great to be able to network with like-minded people, who all run such diverse businesses. It was great to see all the awards presented and how happy everyone was with their recognition.

We have placed our award on our mantel piece to be admired and it will soon make its way to our Showroom for us to show off to all our customers.

Here we are the proud owners of our Award.
